Principal's Report

Greetings and welcome to Cony Middle and High School's December Newsletter

As we turn the calendar to December, I want to thank our students, staff, and families for the strong start to the school year. This month provides a valuable opportunity to reflect on our progress, celebrate our accomplishments, and finish 2025 with pride and purpose.

Our students continue to impress us—not only with their academic effort, but with the kindness and leadership they show every day in our hallways, classrooms, and activities. From supporting peers to stepping up in extracurriculars, our middle and high school learners remind us what a caring and motivated community we have.  Our Sources of Strength group hosted a gratitude wall where students posted the things that they were grateful for.  The wall is inspirational.  There are lots of references to their families, friends, and staff members.

December is also a time when routines can feel more challenging. Shorter days, busy schedules, and holiday excitement can make it harder to stay focused. We encourage families to help students maintain good habits: consistent attendance, structured homework routines, and plenty of rest. These small supports make a big difference in students’ well-being and academic success.

As we look ahead to the new year, we remain committed to creating a safe, respectful, and supportive environment where every student can thrive. We appreciate your partnership and wish all families a peaceful, healthy, and joy-filled holiday season.

Here are some important upcoming events and activities to make you aware of:

Attendance Matters

As we move into December, it’s more important than ever for students to be in school consistently. Every day of learning matters. Even a few absences can add up, making it harder to keep up with new material, participate in class activities, and stay connected with teachers and friends. Strong attendance builds strong habits—and those habits lead to better grades, more confidence, and greater success in and out of the classroom.

We know December can be a busy month, but showing up each day makes a real difference. Thank you for helping us finish 2025 strong by making attendance a priority!

Communication Strategies with families

Don't forget we contact families in a number of ways.  We post on our augustaschools.org website and we also have Facebook and Instagram accounts.   In addition, we send out emails to our families.  If you are not receiving our emails, please contact us to add your email.  We hope our newsletters also provide information to our students and families.

Spirit Week

The Student Council is hosting Spirit Week before vacation. Here is the schedule:  M-F 12/15-19  Monday- Holiday Hat and Sock Day; Tuesday- Candy Cane Day (wear red and white); Wednesday- Ugly Sweater Day; Thursday- Feeling Frosty Day (wear all white); Friday- Comfy Pajama Day

Holidays and Students and Staff

Sometimes the holidays can be a challenging time for our students.   If you have any concerns, remember that our Guidance Dept/School Clinicians are able to help.

Remote School Days

As winter approaches, we want to let you know that we are still using remote school days as an option as we did last year. We made some slight changes with the feedback we received from staff and families. We will use up to 5 days for remote school days. One major difference is that our Supt Tracy may called a potential snow day and we will give our lunches, but if the storm goes away, then he may have us go to regularly scheduled school. Another change is that students will have remote assignments that must be turned on the next day of school (not three days later). For the secondary level, teachers will have office hours from 8-11.

Congratulations to the students who were selected for the Students of the Month.  Students are nominated by our staff and selected for their positive contributions to Cony.  We congratulate them on being selected.

Athletic Update

Cony Athletics - December Newsletter from AD Maines

Congratulations to our football team on a season to remember. The highest scoring team in the state won the North B regional final 40-7 over Fryeburg Academy. Although the season ended with a loss in the state championship to Westbrook, it was a remarkable year for the team. With several seniors departing, there will be ample opportunity for younger players to step up next year and lead what should be another very strong team.

Our ESports team is competing on Saturday for their state final.  Good luck to all of those students and their coach Adam Bourgeois.  The game is available to watch live stream on this link  https://www.twitch.tv/playvs

Winter sports are here! Both of the basketball teams are expected to have strong seasons, wrestling is poised for a great year and a chance to host the state championship, and competitive cheer is excited to get going. This year, three of our teams are part of a Co-op, where they are joined by other schools to field our team:

Hockey - Cony, Erskine, Hall-Dale, Maranacook, Monmouth, Mt. Blue, Spruce, Winthrop

Swimming - Cony, Gardiner, Hall-Dale (team name is the Capital Area Sturgeons)

Indoor Track - Cony, Hall-Dale, Winthrop

Notable December dates:

Dec. 9 - Boys Basketball home opener at 6:30 v. Mt. Ararat

Dec. 11 - Hockey home opener at 8:40 v. Messalonskee

Dec. 12 - Indoor first meet at 5:00 at Bowdoin College

Dec. 18 - Girls Basketball home opener at 6:00 v. Camden Hills

Dec. 20 - Wrestling hosts the CONY DUALS with 10 visiting schools at 9:00am

Dec. 27 - Girls and Boys Basketball vs. Gardiner at the Augusta Civic Center at 6:00/7:30

Health Suite News!

Additional support in the Health Suite

We are partnering with Maine General to add a contracted worker focused on Substance Use/Abuse, nutrition, and teen issues.  The person is Emily Glynn  and her official title is Community Health Worker.  Maine General received an Alfond grant to be able to provide support and resources.  She will be housed in the Health Suite and will be at Cony 16 hours per week on Mondays and Thursdays.  She has been at Gardiner and Maranacook and the Teen Center over the last year.  Emily will be part of the School Based Health Center and parents/guardians can sign their student up for this additional support.   Let’s give a warm welcome to EMILY GLYNN!

Dental Clinic starts this month! 12/17-12/18

Adolescent oral health care is crucial because it lays the foundation for lifelong habits, prevents issues like cavities and gum disease that can worsen due to lifestyle changes like poor diet and peer pressure, and can be linked to systemic health. Key benefits include early detection of problems, preventing the need for complex and expensive procedures later, and ensuring overall well-being, as poor oral health is linked to pain, missed school, and other systemic diseases.

Immunizations Reminder Letters have gone out to students that are past due or due for immunizations

Once your child has been vaccinated or has an updated document, please provide an updated immunization record to the school showing proof of vaccination. If you have any questions or need assistance, please reach out to the school's nurse. Thank you.

Warmly,
