Principal's Report

Greetings and welcome to Cony Middle and High School's November's Newsletter

We hope this information provides you with the updates about our school.  Don't forget we contact families in a number of ways.  We post on our augustaschools.org website and we also have Facebook and Instagram accounts.   In addition, we send out emails to our families.  If you are not receiving our emails, please contact us to add your email.  We hope our newsletters also provide information to our students and families.

School Attendance Matters

Regular school attendance plays a vital role in your student's academic success and overall well-being. So far this year, 290 of Cony students are considered chronically absent, meaning they have missed 10% or more of the school year. Even a few missed days each month can add up quickly and make it difficult for students to keep up with their learning.

When students attend school consistently, they are more likely to stay on track academically, build strong relationships with teachers and classmates, and develop positive habits that lead to long-term success.  If you’re planning travel, vacations, or medical appointments, please schedule them outside of school days when possible.

We understand that absences sometimes happen for valid reasons, and we are here to help. If your family is facing challenges that make it difficult for your student to attend school regularly, please reach out to us. Our school team can connect you with resources and supports to help improve attendance and ensure your child has every opportunity to succeed.

Thank you for your continued partnership and commitment to your student’s education. Together, we can make every day count.

Quarter 2 and Recognition Assemblies

October 31st was the last day of Quarter 1 and November 3rd is the first day of Quarter 2.  We are thrilled to begin the next quarter.  We will send out the Quarter 1 report cards once grades are finalized.  We will celebrate our students during Recognition Assemblies for both the High School on November 18th and the Middle school on November 19th(Grade 7) and 20th (Grade 8) by grade levels.

Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving Week

To celebrate Veteran's Day, we don't have school on Tuesday, November 11th.  Thank you to all of our veterans.  Please know that we don't have school on November 26, 27, and 28 due to Thanksgiving break.

Resources and Support for Students

At Cony Middle and High School, we are committed to helping every student feel supported—academically, socially, and emotionally. Below are some of the resources available to students and families:

Academic Help
Students can access extra help from teachers during our daily RAM time period, after school, or by appointment. Students and parents can contact their student's teachers for extra help.  In addition, the National Honor Society provides tutoring for interested students.  If your student could use a little extra help, tutoring can be a great option. Students benefit from: Learning effective study and organization strategies; building confidence in challenging subjects and receiving extra guidance to improve or maintain grades.  To sign up, go on Cony's website or this site https://sites.google.com/augustaschools.org/conynhs/home?authuser=0

Weekend Food Bags
Through our partnership with the Augusta Food Bank, students can receive weekend food bags to take home on Fridays. These are discreetly distributed and available to any student who may benefit. Please contact the Health Suite for more information.

The Cony Cupboard
The Cony Cupboard provides non-perishable food items, snacks, and personal care products for students and families in need. Students can visit or request items through their counselor or a trusted staff member.

Clothing Support
We have clothing available for students who need everyday items, warm coats, or shoes. Families can reach out to the main office, a school counselor, or our Reintegration Specialist to request assistance.

Remote School Days

As winter approaches, we want to let you know that we are still using remote school days as an option as we did last year. We made some slight changes with the feedback we received from staff and families. We will use up to 5 days for remote school days. One major difference is that our Supt Tracy may called a potential snow day and we will give our lunches, but if the storm goes away, then he may have us go to regularly scheduled school. Another change is that students will have remote assignments that must be turned on the next day of school (not three days later). For the secondary level, teachers will have office hours from 9-11.

November Dinners

One of community members coordinated free dinner meals for Augusta residents for Mondays and Thursday in November.  The free meals will take place at our schools from 5:30-7:00.  On Thursday, Nov. 6th the meals will be at Farrington and Lincoln and on Monday, November 10th the meals will be at Cony and Lincoln.  See our website for more information.

Sincerely,

Kim Liscomb, Principal

Athletic Update

Cony Athletics - November Newsletter

With the end of October in sight, we are in the throws of state playoffs. 24 of our student athletes have been awarded all-conference recognition, with football earning half of that total. These honors are led by Parker Morin who was named the North B Football POY. In addition to our athlete’s success, we had three coaches honored as well - BL Lippert (North B Football COY), Kyle Bishop (Asst. Football COY), and Michael Sweeting (KVAC B/C South Girls Soccer COY). Below is a quick recap on each team and important dates going forward.

Football - entering the playoffs as the favorite to make a state championship game. The team finished at 8-0 and averaged 50 points per game in earning the #1 seed. We will host a semi-final on Nov. 7 at 7:00 vs. the winner of Messalonskee/Skowhegan game. We will have more on the team in next months newsletter.

Girls Soccer - an improved season that led to a play-off appearance for the first time in 8 years. Good senior leadership and improved skill were the foundation of the turnaround. The team is in a good place to keep building on their momentum.

Boys Soccer - with a prelim win at Waterville in OT, the boys won the programs first play-off game since 2019. A talented senior class and great goalie play have made a huge difference. Hopefully a win over #1 seed John Bapst is a possibility.

Volleyball - a strong end to the season saw the team upset both EL and Gardiner in exciting matches at home. The team entered the playoffs as an #8 seed and lost in the prelims. The senior class will be missed - the five core players were a big part of the teams success the past few seasons.

Golf - a learning year for a young team, the golf squad will bring back several players next year. Lilah Goldey qualified for states for the second year in a row, finishing in 9th place.

XC - the boys team finished 4th at the North B regional meet, qualifying for the state meet. The team saw several runners improve throughout the year and Isaiah Sabean earned all-conf. The girls were a two person team and are hoping to attract more runners next year. Emily Foster did qualify as an individual for states.

Field Hockey - the program made the playoffs yet again, earning the #8 seed. The highlight win came over #4 Leavitt in a strong 3-2 overtime W. 3 players earned all-conference.

Sideline Cheer - the team saw growth in numbers and were a big help in making home games fun. They also did an excellent job putting on Homecoming week!
