Dear Hussey Families,

Wow I can't believe we are in November already. The school year is flying by so quickly. Students have been doing amazing things at Hussey and we are so proud of them.

Thank you to our AMAZING PTO for a wonderful Trunk or Treat. It was a wonderful night filled with so much happiness. We thank all of those participated and donated treats for our students. Check out some of the pictures of the night at the end of the newsletter.

Students in grade 3-5 have been participating in STEAM TEAM afterschool. I truly appreciate the volunteers who have made this club reality for our students.

Just a reminder please make sure to call the office by 1:00 pm with any dismissal changes. All dismissal changes should come through the office and not the classroom teachers. It is important that we know how students are getting home in the afternoon. It is a safety issue and we need to be able to account for students. We truly appreciate your help with this matter.

Attendances

Did you know?

  • Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.

  • Missing 10% or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.

  • Students can still fall behind if they miss just one or two days every few weeks.

  • Being late to school may lead to poor attendance.

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school-and themselves. Start building this habit so they learn that going to school on time, everyday is important. Eventually good attendance will be a skill that will help them succeed in high school and college.

When does Absences Become a Problem?

  • Chronic Absences- 18 or more days a school year

  • Approaching Chronic Absences- 10 to 17 days a school year

  • Satisfactory- 9 or fewer absences a school year

Cold Weather

As winter approaches, it's important for students to be well-prepared for the chilly months ahead. Bringing the right cold weather gear to school is essential for maintaining comfort, health, and focus in the classroom and during outdoor activities. Here are some key considerations and tips for students to ensure they are ready to face the elements:

  1. Layering is Key: Encourage students to dress in layers, which can be easily added or removed as temperatures change throughout the day. A good base layer should wick moisture away from the skin, while a middle layer provides insulation. An outer layer, such as a waterproof jacket, protects against wind and precipitation.

  2. Proper Footwear: Insulated and waterproof boots are a must for keeping feet warm and dry, especially if students walk to school or spend time outside during recess.

  3. Accessories Matter: Hats, gloves, and scarves are small items that pack a big punch in terms of warmth retention.

  4. Backpack Essentials: Students could keep an extra pair of socks or gloves in their backpack for emergencies.

  5. Stay Dry: Wet clothing can lead to rapid heat loss and discomfort. Encourage students to bring a change of clothes if heavy snow or rain is forecasted, ensuring they stay dry and warm throughout the day.

  6. Hydration and Nutrition: Cold weather can sometimes mask dehydration, so remind students to drink plenty of fluids.
